Eric was admitted to the Bar in 1981 and took silk in 1992.

Eric started practising as a member of the Pretoria Society of Advocates and was a founding member of Circle Chambers in Brooklyn, Pretoria.

In 2017 he joined the Johannesburg Society of Advocates (JSA), where he is a senior member, and practices at the Maisels Group of Advocates in Sandton. Eric currently serves on the JSA’s Professional and Fees Committee.

He is a director and Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC (AoA); the editor of the AoA’s bimonthly e-periodical ‘Arbitrarily Speaking!’, and is also a member of the Society of Construction Law for Africa. Eric further served as a tutor for some of the AoA’s arbitration courses.

Eric has acted in many areas of litigation, but predominantly has a general commercial practice, which is focussed on: Arbitration law; construction law; company and insolvency law, the law relating to medicines, medical schemes and health care; administrative law; property law; public-private partnerships; and tax law (including customs law). Furthermore, he frequently acts as an adjudicator and arbitrator.

Eric was extensively involved in major and multiple arbitral disputes arising from the development and construction of the Gautrain Project for a number of years. These disputes involved and related to construction and engineering law, as well as environmental law and property law.

In 2017 Eric successfully completed an advanced course in business rescue practice (equivalent to a post-graduate qualification in this field) through the University of South Africa under the auspices of the Law Society of South Africa. He also successfully completed the AoA’s Specialist Course in Construction Law too.

Eric is an accredited advocacy trainer. He previously also served as a Fee Ombudsman for the Pretoria Bar.
Eric has acted as a High Court judge from time to time. In the mid-1990s he was a member of the Income Tax Board for two terms.

He has appeared in many prominent reported cases in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and in the Constitutional Court. Forty-six (46) of the cases he appeared in feature in South African law reports. Eric has also appeared in cases in the Botswana High Court.
