Johan Kilian is a member of The Maisels Group of Advocates in Sandton. He was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa in 1996. He was also admitted to practise as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2008. His practice encompasses general commercial litigation and arbitration, with a focus on contract law, delict, company law, and property law. His court appearances over more than 28 years have included the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal of the Republic of South Africa. Judgments in certain of his litigious matters have been reported in the SA Law Reports, the Juta Daily Reports, and the Labour Law Reports. He has accepted acting appointments as Judge of the High Court of South Africa.
Kilian is a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC and a certified mediator, assessed by the Society of Mediators (UK).
After matriculating in 1987, Kilian read law at the University of the Free State where he served on the Student Representative Council and various student bodies. He competed in the Southern African Moot Court competition, Swaziland in 1994 and the Jessup International Moot Court Competition, St. Petersburg, Florida, USA in 1995. He attained the B Comm and LLB degrees in 1992 and 1995 respectively.
