Owen has practised as a specialist in intellectual property law since 1984, appearing in all Courts in these matters.
He is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law. He has served as a Senior Adjudicator on its panel for domain name disputes since 2007, and for over a decade served as the External Moderator of the Institute’s trade mark law examination.
Owen has lectured for University of Johannesburg’s LLM in intellectual property law and regularly serves as an examination and thesis moderator for this degree. He has given guest lectures in trademark law and copyright law at UCT and Stellenbosch University, including the latter’s annual public lecture presented by the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property (see here).
Owen has regularly published articles on developments in the laws of trade marks, copyright, and unlawful competition, as well as presenting papers on intellectual property issues at industry conferences and seminars. Owen has been accredited by Conflict Dynamics as a commercial mediator, has served as an arbitrator and has also acted as a High Court judge.
Owen is the author of `Law Made Simple : Compliance for Business, Citizens and for our Government` (which is available in retail and also from Protea Books here) and the first edition of which was honoured with an endorsement by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He is also the author of `Intellectual Property Made Simple` (which is available in retail and also from Siber Ink here) and is South Africa’s contributing author to the work `International Trademark Dilution`.
